Join RAWdance for our 20th anniversary theatrical home season! To celebrate, the company is sharing four world premieres for its return to San Francisco’s ODC Theater.
The production features two new works by the company’s Co-Artistic Directors Wendy Rein and Ryan T. Smith, and two commissioned works by pairs of the company’s dancer-collaborators. Smith and Rein’s “Escape” dives into the culturally-rooted, vacation enclaves of the past, founded in response to the exclusion of immigrants, Black people, Jews, and queer folx from established resorts. Inspired by images and stories of the Borscht Belt and Provincetown, “Escape” sets the scene for personal reflection against a backdrop exploding with vintage beach wear and a cheeky dance romp into resort culture. Building on excerpts shared during the company’s 2023 rounds of the CONCEPT series, “Social Circle” dives further back in time to the Victorian Era, when the rules of etiquette exploded in an ever-shifting landscape of class and caste. This all-female quartet features luscious, technical movement set to a soundscore imbued with historical recordings of ballroom instruction.
Highlighting the collaborative spirit and unique voices within the company, RAWdance is also commissioning new works by its dancer-collaborators. Erin Yen and Kelly Del Rosario will premiere their duet, “Refer,” which uses the quirky cultural references that the artists hold dear as the impetus for movement. Stacey Yuen and Nick Wagner will offer a new quartet exploring grief through cultural death rituals, the stages of mourning, and the unique challenges of grieving in the pandemic era. The Friday night performance will be co-sponsored by Litquake.
