Venue
Yerba Buena Gardens
Workshop takes place on the large stairs (bleacher-like architecture) near the Leroy King Carousel, located at 4th and Howard, San Francisco.
Registration is limited
The workshop will be capped at 24 participants.
The free workshop will include a 50 minute class led by RAWdance’s Co-Artistic Directors Wendy Rein and Ryan T. Smith and company performer/collaborator Stacey Yuen. Following a brief warm-up, students will learn excerpted materials from RAWdance’s 2019 work Circuit which takes full advantage of the site’s unique architecture. This is a great opportunity for students to get out of the studio, away from the mirror, and experience site-specific work, while getting a taste of RAWdance’s approach to contemporary choreography. Fun and physically demanding, Circuit is one of the dancers’ favorite pieces to perform and we look forward to being able to share it with you! Circuit is also the first of three works that RAWdance will be sharing as part of Drawing on a Decade, a retrospective of RAWdance’s 10 years of partnership with Yerba Buena Gardens Festival; the free performance begins June 15 at 1pm.
A brief, informal, Q&A session will follow the class, giving students the opportunity to gain insight into three artists’ perspectives within the field.
This workshop is geared towards intermediate to advanced dance students aged 14-18. For any dancers who are outside of that age range who are interested in attending, please contact us at raw@rawdance.org. Registration will be capped at 24 participants.
Logistics: Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and dancing outside, wear shoes that are comfortable to move in and can get dirty, and should bring adequate water, snacks, layers, and sunscreen. There is no dedicated changing area or restroom. There are public bathrooms in the Gardens, and nearby at the Metreon and other institutions. All personal belongings will need to stay with participants on site. The RAWdance team will do our best to monitor bags, but this is a public space and we strongly recommend that participants limit possessions and avoid bringing anything of personal or monetary value.
