The Iowa International ScreenDance Festival 2020 presents “Picnic”, to be screened online as part of the 14th annual Iowa Dance Festival.
“Picnic” takes place within a surreal, grassy bubble, echoing the experience of its creators while sheltering in place in New York’s Hudson Valley this summer. Themes of time and consumption expand and converge throughout the film, countered by a klezmer music through-line. Developed and performed by RAWdance Co-Artistic Directors, Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein, the work draws inspiration from the vibrant, saturated scenes of “The Wizard of Oz” and “Snow White,” which walk the line between real and illusory. Scenes that gleam on the surface, but where a beautiful field of poppies or a shiny red apple could pose a threat.
“Picnic” premiered as part of the CONCEPT series: Digital Edition in August 2020.
ABOUT IOWA DANCE FESTIVAL
The Iowa Dance Festival is proud to bring dancers and musicians together from across the state of Iowa. For the past 13 years, they have brought dance to the community through collaborations between amateur and professional artists. This year they are working to bring dance to Iowa City through several virtual events and a drive-in performance.
