The Palm Springs International Dance Festival 2021 presents RAWdance’s short dance film Picnic (2020), as part of a showcase of work by artists who accept dance as their muse. The festival includes film, photography, fine art, and installations.
Picnic takes place within a surreal, grassy bubble, echoing the experience of its creators, RAWdance Co-Artistic Directors Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein, while sheltering in place in New York’s Hudson Valley last summer. Themes of time and consumption expand and converge throughout the film, countered by a klezmer music through-line.
Picnic premiered as part of the CONCEPT series: Digital Edition in August 2020.
ABOUT Palm Springs International Dance Festival
The Palm Springs International Dance Festival (PSIDF) is a program of Nickerson-Rossi Dance (NRD). Since 2013, NRD has been bringing dance to Palm Springs through educational programs that commission internationally recognized educators to make a lasting impact on youth in Palm Springs by exposing them to the art of dance and providing further opportunities to those who wish to pursue dance as a professional career or a forever love. They aim to produce programs within the festival that have low or no cost to serve the greater desert communities at large and orchestrate performances that feature world renowned dance companies of all cultural and artistic backgrounds.
