RAWdance’s 15th anniversary home season delivers a suite of three works, unearthing and sifting through uncertain times past and present. The company plunges into the current tenuous state of affairs through a trio of historical lenses, finding lessons in the past and flashes of hope for the future.
The program features three works:
Roar (world premiere) peels away the glitz and glam of the jazz age to illuminate the brewing rifts and extreme economic disparity sweeping the country. The piece includes an original score by Bay Area composer Joel St. Julien and choreography by RAWdance’s Co-Artistic Directors, Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein.
14 (world premiere) delves into the complex history of the 14th amendment and the impact of the equal protection clause, which sits at the base of many of our current political battlegrounds. 14 features choreography by the company’s new Associate Artistic Director, Katerina Wong.
Brilliant Alarm (2017) responds to recurring cycles of anti-intellectual rhetoric throughout modern history, and features an original score by Surabhi Saraf. Originally created for YBCA’s 2017 Transform Fest, Brilliant Alarm was choreographed by Smith and Rein.
Performers for the season include Kelly Del Rosario, Kaitlyn Ebert, Carly Johnson, Tayler Kinner, Aaron Perlstein, Wendy Rein, Ryan T. Smith, Nick Wagner, Katerina Wong, Juliann Witt, and Stacey Yuen.
All three works feature scenic design by Chad Owens and lighting design by Allen Willner.
