The 5th anniversary of the collaborative program pairs local professional choreographers and filmmakers to create short dance films for the San Francisco Dance Film Festival. RAWdance’s artistic directors/choreographers Wendy Rein and Ryan T. Smith will collaborate with filmmaker Shelley Lewis, whose short films and commercials have garnered numerous awards. The second team of “Co-Lab” artists will pair choreographer Robert Dekkers, founder and artistic director of Post:Ballet with commercial and music video director Marta Dymek.
These artists will soon meet for the first time and be challenged to create their short dance films in just three days on location in San Francisco this September. The two original interdisciplinary works for the screen will be premiered on the closing night of the fall festival at the Brava Theater Center.
ABOUT Co-Lab
The Co-Laboratory is a unique collaboration between two teams of choreographers and filmmakers who will create two short dance films in a week, shortly before the annual fall festival. The intention is not to create the perfect film, but to bring professional artists into the atmosphere of a laboratory, one that challenges them to think collaboratively and explore possibilities for expression outside their fields, hopefully inspiring future creative relationships among local artists.
